About two years ago, I remember feeling really fed up with the way my life was going. I felt as if I was a spectator in my own life, letting things happen instead of deciding what happened. I felt like a stunted tree that for lack of some vital component, whether it be sunlight, nutrients, or water, was not thriving. Change was not going to come by me being passive about the situation.
One thing I realized was that I wasn’t doing anything with my life. Yes, I was doing things like going to school, taking care of my daughter, and helping to provide for my family – these were expected of me. But I wasn’t doing anything that I wanted to do just for the joy it brought me or the calm that it produced within me.
I wanted to be enjoying my life not just going through the motions.
So, I made a list. I made a list of all the things I remember wanting to do as a child that I never pursued.
This list included:
- Living in France
- Playing a musical instrument
- Traveling around the world
- Becoming an author
- Dating guys from different cultures …
I decided that I needed to start tackling the items on my list that still interested me. From the moment I made that decision, I started feeling more light-hearted because pursuing that list gave my life meaning. I call it my Life List, and not a bucket list, because these are items that I want to explore on my journey to leading a fuller life, not things to do because my time on this earth is coming to an end. I feel that it just gives the whole idea a more positive connotation.
